Asian Fossil Discovery Reignites Debate on Human Origins

NSW University today released details of new discoveries made in South West China in the province of Yunnan. 

The Human remains that were unearthed in 1989 but have only recently been studied by scientists may indicate the existence of a new branch of the human species which occurred only 11,000 and 15,000 years ago.

The joint team of Scientists from Australia and China have dubbed them as the ‘Red Deer Cave People’ after the site in Maludong in which the remains were found. 

These Human remains consisted of a human skull which Associate Professor Darren Curnoe from the University of NSW states ‘has an unusual mosaic of features, a mixture of features we would see in our ancestors from hundreds of thousands of years ago.  As well as some features a lot like living humans and some unusual features as well.’

Now archaeologists are trying to find out what this discovery means.  Some like Curnoe believe ‘the specimen has come from a new evolutionary line.  The alternative is they could actually be a modern human population, one we’ve not known about before, one that migrated very early from Africa and perhaps didn’t make a genetic contribution to living east Asians.’

Others like Dr. Isabelle De Groote from the Natural History Museum believe that the Red Deer Cave people could be a ‘hybrid of a group of people who left Africa and interbred with other human species.’

Despite the opposing opinions archaeologists all agree that the Red Deer Cave people are a mystery that when solved could unlock valuable information about human evolutionary line.
